ROIDS MSK HA - Interview

posted Fri, 9/10/10 9:18 AM

Here’s a little interview with ROIDS (MSK HA), during his visit to China.

ROIDS

-What’s up Roid, how’s it feel to be in China?
Hello mate, apart from the 5 hours of solid turbulence on the flight
it feels good, definately a pretty inspirational country and
somewhere i’ve always wanted to go.

-Tell us why you’re in China.
We got an invite to paint at the Ningbo Graffiti Festival so a perfect
excuse to get some painting done and explore some new places.

ROIDS

-I know you’ve been to other places in Asia. Any major difference among all?
Yeah, ive also been to Japan, Thailand and Malaysia, obviously each
of the places have got very different vibes to them and work in
different ways, but whats interesting to me is there are all relatively new,
and not only can you finding great oportunities to get over down
to the government, police or general publics niaivity but there doesn’t
currently seem to be as many preconceptions and negative views
on graffiti as we have in the west (no doubt this will eventually change
with inevitable increase in illegal graffiti in the future).
Its gonna be good to see where it all goes in  the next 10 years.

ROIDS

-How would you describe the styles of the local writers that you’ve painted with?
Its hard to describe a particular style thats going on in china really.
From what i saw there was alot of different and interesting stuff going on.
I guess people are drawing their influences from all sorts of places,
whether its writers that have visited and made an impression or stuff
that has been published online in the magazines you guys have out there.
You know what its like these days, the worlds a big melting pot of styles.
Obviously the most interesting stuff to me was the guys that were using
Chinese script, would be great to see more of it, though from what i
understand it can be pretty tricky to stylise the forms without changing
the characters all together.

ROIDS

-How many days do you normally do a piece back home?
It depends really, its can be a bit of a battle with my work and ill find
weeks where i wont get a chance to do anything.
But on average i try to get at least 2 things done a week.

-We all know you’ve been pushing the edge on your pieces.

So where does your inspiration comes from?
I draw inspiration from loads of places, travel, music, film, fashion,
architecture, geometry, classic and contemporary art, i tend to take
lots of photos of things … whether its a piece of typography i see
on a street sign, a pattern i see on the upholstery of a train seat or
some interesting geometric tiling inside a building.  Its the same
with color, if i see a nice combination ill either snap it or try and
keep it in mind for some ideas in the future. You often find the
freshest and most inspiring things in the strangest places.

ROIDS

-What do you plan to experiment in your next pieces?
At the moment im not to sure. I’ve got alot of different things that
i want to play around with. Its just finding the time to get em all done.

-Where is your next travel destination?
Most likely somewhere in mainland europe.

I think I’ve got Germany coming up next.

ROIDS

-Any tunes to share with our readers?
Yeah , far too many, there’s so much good stuff out there.
I listen to a lot of early cosmic and synthy stuff along side some
nu electro, chicago and acid. its pretty hard but I’m trying to keep
up with all the great new stuff that’s coming out over here as well.

check out http://intergalactic.fm/ for continuous goodness.

ROIDS

-Shout outs:

and showing us a good time, dezi dezio, MTN for always delivering the realness
and all the other guys and girls we were welcomed by and shown a good time.
